The Idea: Where it all began

Before there were sketches, samples, or even a name, there was just an idea — one that had been quietly growing for years.

I grew up in Singapore and was lucky enough to travel all across Asia as a child. I’ve always been fascinated by the ornate fabrics and intricate designs of traditional Asian garments. Some of my most treasured memories are of days spent in Little India with my mum, exploring fabric stores and admiring the vibrant beading, textures, and colours. We’d try on dresses and touch every silk, sequin, and thread — I was completely obsessed.

When I moved back to Australia, that fascination didn’t leave me. I’ve always been drawn to people who wear beautiful, detailed outfits — pieces that feel special, unique, and full of personality.

As summer approached, I had an idea: I wanted to make a fun skirt I could wear around — something I hadn’t seen in stores, something that felt like me. I’ve always loved having unique pieces in my wardrobe, but in a sea of minimal, capsule-style fashion, I struggled to find high-quality, beaded garments that didn’t totally break the bank.

So I decided to make my own.

I spent weekends travelling around Sydney, visiting different fabric suppliers and searching for the perfect material. I wanted something versatile — a fabric that could be styled a hundred different ways: dressed up or down, worn to the beach or in winter with boots and a jacket. Eventually, I found it — and I made my first skirt.

After wearing it out just once, I was flooded with compliments. People asked me where it was from. And that’s when the idea for Fia Martinii truly took shape.

As someone who craves creativity, building this brand has been the perfect project. I’ve loved every step of the journey — from designing and sourcing, to styling and sharing the process online. At the heart of it all is a deep commitment to making clothing that’s not only beautiful and bold but also ethically and sustainably made.

For our first collection, we’re using deadstock fabrics — giving new life to high-quality materials that would otherwise go to waste. Every garment is designed and made in Australia by local artisans, so we can ensure exceptional quality while supporting small businesses. We know that nothing made can ever be fully sustainable, but we’re doing everything we can to reduce our impact at every stage.

Fia Martinii pieces are designed to go everywhere with you — on holidays, to dinner, to the beach, layered in winter or worn solo in the sun. They’re pieces that help you stand out, but not just for one night. They’re meant to last, to live with you, and to be reimagined again and again.

Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @fiamartinii to see how we’re styling it, and come along for the ride — this is just the beginning.
